Citation management software can save you time, help you keep your research organized, and sometimes even help you connect with others who have similar research interests.  There are many citation managers available, either free or for a fee, each with its own strengths. This presentation will demonstrate four of the most widely used citation managers and help you decide which would best meet your needs. This is not a hands-on training session, but will review the basic features of RefWorks, Mendeley, Zotero, and EasyBib and the audience for each.

A fundamental understanding of copyright is essential for both teaching and research. This 60-minute presentation will introduce Duquesne’s copyright policy and fair use guidelines. The presentation will also provide practical tips for posting course reserves material and for obtaining and using material in teaching and scholarship, including an overview of the recent Georgia State e-reserves case.

Information literacy is the set of abilities required to recognize when information is needed and then locate, evaluate, and effectively use the needed information. Although this concept might seem universal, teaching and assessing information literacy at the program level takes on many different forms in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.  The presenters will describe their work to document and assess undergraduate information literacy learning in the English, Psychology, and Biology programs. Each of these disciplines presents unique challenges in regard to incorporating information literacy into coursework as well as what information literacy means on a program level and how students apply it with the context of their majors. A panel discussion will follow the presentations.

Haunted Duquesne

Join us for good stories and tasty treats on Wednesday October 30, 8-9:30 p.m. in the Silverman Center on the 1^st floor of Gumberg Library. University Archivist Tom White, author of several books on Pennsylvania folklore, will tell ghost stories and legends of the University and surrounding neighborhoods.

Celebrate Banned Book Week at Gumberg, September 22−28, 2013

Have you ever read a "Banned Book"? Maybe you have! Syop by the Gumberg LIbrary 4th floor and see the book display of several banned books. You will be surprised what titles are on the list! Feel free to check out a book or two.  The American Library Association describes the importance of celebrating this week:

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community –- librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types –- in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

Performance Highlights selections from Sacred Music Collection, October 4

You are invited to attend a performance of music from the Duquesne University Sacred Music Collections, Friday, October 4^th 2013 at 3:45 p.m. in the Duquesne University Chapel. The concert will feature music from the Boys Town Collection and by composers Paul Manz, Allen Hobbs, Richard Proulx, David Craighead, Jean Langlais, and Duquesne University composers Joseph Willcox Jenkins and Zvonimir Nagy. The selections will be performed by faculty and students of the Mary Pappert School of Music. The concert is being held in conjunction with the ATMLA/NYSO Joint Chapter Meeting of Music Librarians at the Gumberg Library October 4th and 5th. Library 3rd Floor Closed September 20, 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. and will resume the week of September 23

Due to maintenance, Gumberg Library third floor will be closed from 8 p.m.-1 a.m., on September 20, 2013.  The floor will also be closed between 8 p.m.-1 a.m. beginning on Monday September 23 with nightly closures continuing until the maintenance is completed. Study rooms and the Spiritan Collection Room will be inaccessible.  Additional tables and chairs will be available on all other floors.  We appreciate your patience and understanding!
