"Everyday Miracles" Art Exhibit Coming to Gumberg this Summer

This summer, we are pleased to announce we will be hosting the unique traveling exhibit from The National Library of Medicine (NLM): Everyday Miracles: Medical Imagery in Ex-Votos. This exhibit presents examples of the ex-votos tradition of devotional art created in times of illness and despair. These remarkable paintings are responses of gratitude to the heavens for miraculous healings. NLM also notes that ex-votos offer a “rare opportunity to view health, healing, and illness through the hearts and minds of the ordinary person.”

The display will be available on the 5th floor of Gumberg Library from June 23-August 2, 2014 during the library’s normal operating hours. As an introduction to the exhibit and the ex-votos tradition, we will host a Lunch and Learn event on June 30, 2014, 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m on the 5th floor of Gumberg. Refreshments will be provided. An additional educational event will follow later in the summer. Check back here for further information.

The exhibit's intriguing intersection of medicine, art, and faith reflects the diverse range of disciplines and the interdisciplinary nature of Duquesne University. The exhibit is of interest to the Catholic community at large, in addition to students, faculty and staff in the health sciences, theology, and art history as well as in English, history, modern languages, philosophy, and communication.

EndNote: "The Most Powerful Tool for Managing Your Research" is coming!

Beginning June 2014, EndNote will be made available to the Duquesne University community through a campus site license. EndNote, which works across Windows and Mac operating systems, provides the ability to find, store, and organize citations, as well as generate and format citations within documents. For more information on this robust tool, visit Gumberg's EndNote guide. As we will no longer subscribe to RefWorks after June 30, 2014, the EndNote guide includes information on how to transfer any saved data from RefWorks to EndNote.

Instructions for obtaining a copy of EndNote are in development and will be shared as soon as possible. Updates will be posted here, to the EndNote guide on the library’s website, as well as our Facebook and Twitter pages.

The Day of Four Popes: Two Popes, Two Saints (Research Guide)

On Divine Mercy Sunday this year, hundreds of thousands of people gathered in St. Peter’s Square to witness Pope Francis’ canonization of two of the most influential popes of modern times, John XXIII and John Paul II. Retired Pope Benedict XVI was in attendance. This now historic day has been called the "Day of Four Popes," because it was the first time in the history of the Church that two popes were made saints in the same day, with two living popes taking part in the mass and ceremony.

Pope John XXIII was the main architect of the Second Vatican Council and the wide-ranging changes in all aspects of the Church that it brought about. Pope John Paul II was the most-traveled pope in history as he sought to bring the Gospel to the far-corners of the world. The first Polish pope, he also played an important role in the fall of the Soviet Union.

Pope Francis ended his homily on Sunday eloquently declaring, “May both of [the new saints] teach us not to be scandalized by the wounds of Christ and to enter ever more deeply into the mystery of divine mercy, which always hopes and always forgives, because it always loves.”

In honor of this historic, unprecedented event, Gumberg librarian Ted Bergfelt has created a research guide designed to help Duquesne University students, faculty, and staff learn more about the two new saints. The guide includes links to Pope Francis’ homily, a video of the canonization, biographies of the new saints, and information on connections to Pittsburgh and the Duquesne community.

Explore Zotero

“Grab your research with a single click!” Come explore Zotero, a free online citation manager and research tool. This class will teach you the basics of Zotero, from grabbing citations off the web to creating bibliographies from a list of resources. A great alternative to RefWorks, learning the basics of Zotero will help you decide which citation manager is right for you.

 

Documenting the Impact of Your Scholarship

Date: Thursday, May 8, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Presenters: David A. Nolfi and Allison Brungard (Co-sponsored by the Center for Teaching Excellence)

Location: Gumberg Library, Room 408

The workshop's goal is to help faculty members applying for promotion and tenure to make the case for excellence in scholarship by using tools such as citation analysis, journal metrics, and other methods. Newer faculty who are just starting to publish can also benefit by using these tools to develop effective publishing strategies. Following the presentation, participants will have hands-on opportunities to use the tools and begin documenting the impact of their own scholarship. The workshop will conclude with a faculty-led discussion about using scholarship data in the promotion and tenure process.

 

Predatory Publishing: What You Don’t Know CAN Hurt You…

Date: Thursday, May 8, 3 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Presenters: David Nolfi, Dr. Joan Lockhart, and Charlotte Myers (Sponsored in partnership with CTE.)

Location: Gumberg Library, Room 408

A growing number of new publishers are inviting researchers and recent Ph.D. graduates to publish their work in journals of questionable value. These “predatory publishers” often present themselves as reputable publishers and then charge fees in order to get the author’s work published. Predatory publishers mimic the business models of well-respected Open Access journals, making them difficult to recognize.

This workshop is aimed at faculty and graduate students looking to publish their research. Its goals are to help you understand predatory publishing and recognize predatory publishing inquiries. The presenters will discuss ways that you can investigate the reputations of publishers and journals as well as how you can combat predatory publishing in the context of your own discipline or profession.

Gumberg Goes 24/7 for Finals!

Gumberg Library will be open continuously from 7 a.m. on Monday, April 28th to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6th.

Bonus: free food! Free snacks will be provided at midnight during this period of extended hours courtesy of Gumberg Library. Additionally, on Tuesday, April 29th from 3 p.m.-4:30 p.m., the Student Government Association will host a “Study Break” in Gumberg, providing pizza, baked goods, and other snacks and refreshments for students.

As always, Gumberg accommodates quiet, individual study as well as group study. Choose the noise level that works best for you:

• Quiet study space is located on the first, second, and third floors.
• Group study areas are located on the fourth and fifth floors.

Nursing Student, Annabel Rayl Wins Gumberg Library Scholarship!

Our student employees are a critical part of our library team and serve the University Mission alongside librarians and staff. Each National Library Week, Gumberg Library acknowledges the vital contribution of our student employees by awarding a $1,000 scholarship. The theme for National Library Week 2014 is “Lives Change @ Your Library,” a concept perfectly exemplified by the winner of our 2014 Gumberg Library Scholarship, nursing student, Annabel Rayl. 

Annabel has worked for Gumberg since October 2013, while also maintaining a job on the weekend to fund her education. She is also involved in the community service organization, Circle K, and a member of the professional nursing fraternity Alpha Tau Delta at Duquesne University. In her application essay, Annabel describes how working at the circulation desk in Gumberg has changed her—helping her to understand and work with a variety of people—as well as learn more about the library. Annabel draws several parallels between her work at Gumberg and her future profession as a nurse, including the ability to work collaboratively in a community. Annabel also notes the library’s role in supporting Duquesne University’s Mission to serve God by serving students. She writes: “The people that I work with go far above and beyond the requirements for their job in order to help students and faculty alike make the most out of the library’s resources.” 

In addition to a $1,000 credit to be applied to her fall tuition bill, her name will be displayed on the permanent plaque in the reference area.

Gumberg Library thanks Annabel for her dedication to the library and congratulates her for winning the 2014 Gumberg Library Student Endowed Scholarship!

The scholarship was founded in 2003 by Gumberg Library employees as part of Duquesne University’s Capital Campaign. The intent in establishing this endowed fund was to provide a way to recognize and assist one of our student assistants during the course of their academic program at Duquesne. Fundraising for the scholarship endowment is ongoing. Gift information is available on the University’s website at http://www.duq.edu/giving. Anyone wishing to contribute should specify that their gift is intended for the Gumberg Library Student Endowed Scholarship.

Gumberg Library Award for Undergraduate Research Presented to Jaclyn Angstadt and Rachael Desmond!

Gumberg provides full-text access to over 100,000 journal titles and over 700,000 volumes, a collection of essential resources for any researcher or scholar at Duquesne University. Each year, Gumberg Library presents an award to the author(s) of the Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium poster that most clearly demonstrates extensive and creative use of Gumberg Library resources, as well as the best understanding and application of principles of information literacy, and effective communication of research/scholarship.

This year the award and prize of $250 go to Jaclyn Angstadt and Rachael Desmond for their poster, Therapeutic Hypothermia and Neurological Outcome after Cardiac Arrest. Jaclyn and Rachael are both senior nursing students graduating in May 2014. The students acknowledged David Nolfi, Health Sciences Librarian, for providing crucial instruction in the use of the research database CINAHL to produce a high quality systematic review. Gumberg Library congratulates Jaclyn and Rachael for their well-earned win and wishes them the best of luck in their post-college endeavors!
