Holiday Notice: Interlibrary Loan Requests

NOTICE:  To increase the likelihood of delivery of Interlibrary Loan materials to Duquesne University users prior to holiday closures, please submit requests through ILLiad by Friday, December 14, 2012.  Materials received for Duquesne University users will be posted electronically or available for pick-up at the library until 4:00PM on Friday, December 21, 2012.  Processing of requests received during the holiday break will resume on Thursday, January 3, 2013.  Please contact the Interlibrary Loan Department by telephone at 412-396-5341 or via email at illservice@duq.edu with any questions.  Happy Holidays!

To ensure the priority of service to Duquesne users, and for safety reasons, everyone entering the building must carry photo ID with them at all times. Children entering the building must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Members of the general public are not permitted to enter the building without an appointment.

• Free snacks at midnight! You’ll find quiet study on the first, second, and third floors.

• Group study areas are on the fourth and fifth floors.

• Always bring your ID—we card for your safety. Card swipe entry required between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. weekdays, and on weekends.

Elevator Replacement Project Begins October 4

The back elevator in the Gumberg Library is the first of three elevators to be replaced in the library. The project for the one elevator will last 11 weeks. There will be increased noise levels at certain times of the day near the back of the study floors. We ask for patience as we proceed.

Want to know more about using RefWorks with the preferred citation style for your discipline? Attend a session designed specifically for researchers who use that style. You will learn how to format a paper and bibliography from within RefWorks, and how to add in-text citations and create a bibliography with Write-n-Cite using your preferred style.

Summer Reading Picks in the Popular Reading Area

Gumberg Library is suggesting some good summer reads, guaranteed to keep you turning the pages. These titles were chosen based on Gumberg Library staff recommendations, or because they were on the New York Times Bestseller List in the last three months, or they are by best-selling authors and have received at least 4 stars from Amazon.com readers.


You can find these titles and much more on the new summer reading guide at http://guides.library.duq.edu/summer-reading. On this first page selected bestsellers are highlighted. Click on the "More Titles" tab to see other summer reading suggestions. The library has a much larger collection of popular books which can be searched in DuCat.

Look for a selection of summer reading books on a cart marked “Summer Reading” in the Popular Reading area on the 4th floor of the Gumberg Library. Enjoy!





Scheduled outage for Elsevier's ScienceDirect and Scopus

ScienceDirect, Scopus, Hub, Applications, SciVal, and Journals Consult are expected to be unavailable for approximately 19 hours beginning Saturday, August 25th, 2012 at 7:30 a.m. for scheduled maintenance for a new release.

Renovation of the fourth floor including new carpeting, tile, and service desk will be completed by August 13. Until then library users will enter the building via the McAnulty Street dock door entrance. Duquesne University ID and/or photo ID are required.

Gumberg Library Temporary Entrance on McAnulty Drive, June 4-August 3


Library users will enter the building via the McAnulty Street dock door entrance while the main entrance and fourth floor are closed for renovation from June 4-August 3. Duquesne University ID and/or photo ID will be required.

Documenting the Impact of Your Scholarship

The workshop’s goal is to help faculty members applying for promotion and tenure to make the case for excellence in scholarship by using tools such as citation analysis, journal metrics, and other methods.  Newer faculty who are just starting to publish can also benefit by using these tools to develop effective publishing strategies.

Following the presentation, participants will have hands-on opportunities to use the tools and begin documenting the impact of their own scholarship.  The workshop will conclude with a discussion about using scholarship data in the promotion and tenure process.

Google Scholar
This session will focus on how to use Google Scholar as a supplement to library research through a demonstration of advanced search features. Participants will learn how to make their searching more precise and how to set up access to Duquesne’s resources through Google Scholar at home. Copyright for Instructors: Opportunities & Considerations

Basic understanding of copyright is essential for both online and classroom instructors. This 90 minute workshop will introduce Duquesne’s copyright policy and fair use guidelines.

• How to access the University’s Copyright Policy and Fair Use Checklist
• Practical tips—for posting course material and for obtaining material for teaching and scholarship
• How to get answers to your copyright questions

Research the Bible with Oxford Biblical Studies Online

This 60 minute workshop will be presented for members of the Duquesne community interested in learning more about the books of the Bible, their historical contexts and meaning. Oxford Biblical Studies Online (OBSO) is a powerful tool to help students, and others with an interest, to more fully understand the Bible. This database contains five translations of the Bible published by Oxford, and study notes from six popular study Bibles. It also provides access to two concordances, a dozen well-respected works of biblical reference, and over 1,000 searchable images.

Through hands-on practice, you will learn:

• How to use the basic Bible verse look up tool
• How to display a study Bible text and its study notes side by side, and how to switch between study Bibles
• How find articles from authoritative reference works on important words, concepts and people mentioned in the biblical text.
• How to search for images, access the timelines and other special features

Reminder- Gumberg Library Swipe Access Hours

Duquesne ID holders must swipe to access the building on weekends and on weekdays from 7-8 a.m. and 5 p.m. till closing. Anyone who has a problem with their ID can call the Circulation Desk at 412.396.6130 for assistance.

Students may bring guests with them to the library, however, anyone not affiliated with Duquesne must show photo ID and register at the Circulation Desk to enter.

The doors will be unlocked during posted weekday business hours from 8 a.m. till 5 p.m. Staff will monitor the doors at all times. Members of the general public will not be admitted unless they have an appointment.

Anyone entering may be asked to show ID at any time. Anyone who does not comply with a staff member’s request will be required to leave.

Alumni can apply for special alumni library cards at the Circulation Desk but they must also show a photo ID.
