Gumberg Library Endowed Student Scholarship Awarded

The 2010 Gumberg Library Endowed Student Scholarship has been awarded to Jacqueline Weaver, a student majoring in Secondary English in the School of Education. Jacqueline is employed as a student aide in the library’s Maureen Sullivan Curriculum Center and has worked at the library since the fall of 2009.

Jacqueline is the seventh recipient of the $500 award. The scholarship was founded by Gumberg Library employees as part of Duquesne University’s previous Capital Campaign, to recognize the contributions of student workers to the accomplishment of the library’s mission. Any student aide currently employed in the library who has been employed in the library for two or more terms and plans to return to work in the library the following term is eligible to apply.

In her winning scholarship essay, Jacqueline stated “Because of my positive experiences in the Curriculum Center, I desire more than ever to become a teacher, hoping to apply the knowledge I have acquired to an actual classroom setting. She also noted that “… motivating students to become active in their education is among the greatest gifts an organization can offer, and through … dedication to the Duquesne community, the Gumberg Library does just that.”

A brief presentation ceremony at the library will take place during National Library Week, on Gumberg Library Student Aide Appreciation Day, Thursday, April 15, at 1:00 p.m. in the Popular Reading Area on the 4th floor. All are welcome.

Fundraising for the scholarship endowment is ongoing. Gift information is available on the University’s website at http://www.duq.edu/giving. Anyone wishing to contribute should specify that their gift is intended for the Gumberg Library Student Endowed Scholarship.
