Gumberg Library Adds New ScienceDirect E-books

In addition to numerous journal titles, ScienceDirect now offers a comprehensive collection of e-books covering a range of scientific disciplines. You can access eight new individual e-book titles by searching the library’s catalog, DuCat (http://ducat.library.duq.edu).

Forthcoming Change to PubMed @ Duquesne

The National Library of Medicine recently made the following announcement about forthcoming changes to the PubMed interface:

Very soon a link on the PubMed homepage will connect to a preview version. The preview version will enable users to try out the new interface and is expected to run for at least two weeks after which PubMed will exist in the redesigned version. No changes to URLs will be necessary.

This change will affect PubMed @ Duquesne. If you have questions about searching the new interface, please contact David Nolfi, Health Sciences Librarian (nolfi@duq.edu, 412.396.4931).

First Fridays Program: Twick or Tweet? Social Media's Place in Scholarship

Friday: October 2, 2009 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Presenters: Robert Behary, MLS, MBA, Systems Librarian and Julie Motyka, MLS, Reference Librarian

Abstract:
In this presentation, the impact of social media on academe will be explored. The presenters will describe ways in which scholars could use popular, freely available tools to join and create online communities and also provide examples of ways in which such communities can be used to provide opportunities for collaboration and continuing education. Additionally, the presenters will describe the increasing importance of social media tools in scholarship, particularly in terms of tracking trends in various fields of research and study, as well as in widening the scope of academic research and placing it into a global context. This will be a 90-minute presentation geared toward an audience of faculty and graduate students.

Objectives:
Participants will learn strategies for discovering other scholars with similar interests on social media sites.
Participants will learn how to raise their own visibility using social networking.
Participants will learn how to use microblogging to follow a scholarly conference
Participants will learn how social media is being incorporated into scholarly processes (including faculty promotion decisions)

Writing Center @ Gumberg Library

The Writing Center will offer evening and walk-in hours at the Gumberg Library.

The Fall 2009 schedule is:

Gumberg Library Satellite (Popular Reading Rm, 4th floor)
Tuesday 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Thursday 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Consultants work with writing from all disciplines and all stages of the writing process, from outlines and notes to completed drafts and revisions. The Writing Cetner has consultants who specialize in working with business writing, science writing, and ESL writing.

Access Interruption to OTDBASE

OTDBASE is experiencing intermittent interruptions in service. The publisher is working to fix the problem but predicts full resolution could take more than one week.

If you need to do occupational therapy research during an OTDBASE service interrruption, we suggest using CINAHL, Google Scholar, or Scopus.
